Until now, we’ve seen sleek, simple and modern lines dominating the design industry. And I’ll be honest, I have always appreciated a room that is simple and neutral. However we’ve seen a departure from that with the emergence of the ‘granny-chic’ trend. Now don’t get me wrong – this is not breaking news, but I’ve now seen countless examples of granny-chic principles achieved so perfectly and beautifully that I couldn’t not sure about it.
It’s safe to say I adore the look, and not just because it’s nostalgic. It adds character, charm and a touch of European influence to our spaces. Think more is more here. Layers, muted but bold colours, floral patterns, full shelves, intricate details, and of course, cucumber sandwiches.
What’s extra special about this style is you can dip your toe in or fully commit, both work beautifully.
Let’s dive into a few ways you can incorporate this trend without it feeling, well, trendy.
Quilts – oh how I love a layered quilt on a bed. Not only does it (literally and figuratively) add warmth, but it just adds so much visual interest and texture to an otherwise large and solid surface.
Shop Post
Art – one of my favourite ways to add some granny-chic charm and character to a space. Start by rummaging through your local antique or thrift store because I promise they can be gold mines. If you can manage to find two that speak to each other yet are framed differently (think a matte on one and no matte on the other), stack two together on a small wall. Anchor it with a stool or chair and you’ve got yourself the cutest granny-chic vignette.
Pillows – another way to dip a toe in this trend without going too far. If you’ve been here before, you may be familiar with my pillow stacking strategy: a floral, a solid and a stripe/geometric. Which means hello, let’s make that floral a granny-chic statement!
Lampshades – ok this one takes the category of the CUTEST way to incorporate this trend. Especially in a child’s room to add some whimsy and playfulness. If your furniture and fabrics are neutral or have a large-scale pattern, consider a small-scale floral or gingham on your lamp shade.
Wallpaper – this one requires a bit more of a commitment, but if you jump in and pull it off in a way that feels timeless, I promise you won’t regret it. Morris & Co is a favourite for this style of wallpaper – so classy and sophisticated, yet so visually interesting.
Vintage/Antique Furniture – another one you can have a ton of fun with. I don’t know if I’d go this route for all the pieces in your space (think contrast and juxtaposition always – it’s what makes for great design!), but for items like stools, coffee tables, side tables and dressers, it’s a yes from me.
Regardless of whether you are all in or just curious, this trend is going to create real magic and I’m here for it.
